ACE COMBAT IS READY TO FLY AGAIN

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is bringing Bandai Namco's aerial combat series back on October 2, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.

This time the series returns to Strangereal in 2029. The Federation of Central Usea has been overwhelmed by an invasion from the Republic of Sotoa, leaving much of the country occupied and its military scattered.

The player begins far from the image of a legendary ace. After being rescued at sea and brought aboard the aging aircraft carrier Endurance, the pilot is handed a name with much more weight than any ordinary call sign: Wings of Theve.

A LEGEND BUILT FOR A COUNTRY THAT NEEDS HOPE

Wings of Theve is presented as a legendary ace connected to Theve, the capital of the FCU. But the legend was created to keep morale alive.

Now the player has to become the symbol that people were already told existed.

That setup immediately gives Ace Combat 8 something more personal than simply putting another pilot into another war. The aircraft and huge battles are still the spectacle, but

THE STORY

is also about identity, duty and what happens when one person is forced to carry the expectations of an entire country.

JOKER FLIGHT JOINS THE FIGHT

The player will not be flying alone.

Three allied pilots — Baxter, Tasha and Coster — form Joker Flight alongside the player. Bandai Namco has emphasized the relationships between the pilot and squadron, including first-person sequences outside the cockpit between missions.

That could give the campaign room to slow down between sorties before sending players back into the sky.

THE SKY IS THE STAR

Ace Combat has always depended on the feeling of flying through a dramatic battlefield, and Ace Combat 8 is pushing that presentation further.

Bandai Namco says the game uses Unreal Engine 5 along with proprietary cloud technology to create dynamic, multilayered cloudscapes and more detailed environments.

The goal is still fast arcade-style aerial combat rather than a full flight simulator. Dogfights, powerful weapons and large-scale encounters remain at the center of the experience.

MULTIPLAYER IS GETTING MUCH BIGGER

Ace Combat 8 is also making a major multiplayer push.

Its Air Base acts as an interactive online lobby capable of hosting up to 100 players. Online play has its own progression and save data, and Bandai Namco says cross-play will allow pilots to play across supported platforms.

Two major multiplayer modes have been revealed.

Co-Op Assault puts two teams of four into PvE missions where both teams compete for the highest score while fighting enemies and completing objectives.

Co-Op Warfare adds PvP to the formula, putting two teams of four against one another while NPC units remain part of the battle.

For players who spend most of their Ace Combat time in the campaign, this could give Ace Combat 8 a much longer life after

is finished.

HOUR ZERO SETS UP THE WAR BEFORE LAUNCH

Bandai Namco is also expanding

THE STORY

outside the game with HOUR ZERO, a four-part live-action prequel.

The short film follows three survivors during the opening days of Sotoa's invasion and stars Josh Holloway, Brandon Routh and Tamlyn Tomita.

Rather than functioning as a replacement for the campaign, HOUR ZERO is designed to establish

THE WORLD

immediately before the events players will experience in Ace Combat 8.

WHAT BOXXHEAD IS WATCHING

The biggest question for me is whether Ace Combat 8 can balance all of these pieces.

The series already knows how to make fighter jets feel exciting. This game is trying to surround that foundation with a more cinematic campaign, stronger character moments and a significantly expanded online experience.

If those pieces come together, Wings of Theve could feel like more than another Ace Combat sequel.

For now, the skies open October 2, 2026.
